CJ Langenhoven is well known for his political activities, legal work and probably mostly for his ability to write. He also did drawings and joinery work. CJ Langenhoven wrote the Afrikaans words for South Africa’s anthem in 1918. Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrica was composed in 1897 by Enoch Sothonga a Methodist Mission School teacher. The words of the first stanza were originally written in Xhosa as a hymn. Today it is sung together with Sesotho and some English translation as our National Anthem. It is this merging of cultures which the Langenhoven centre building hopes to facilitate.
