The challenge of this project was to upgrade an existing laboratory building which is set in a vineyard for practical work in the field of Viticulture and Oenology (wine making). It was undertaken for the University of Stellenbosch. The design solution was kept simple and rational. The project consists of a large multi – purpose undergraduate laboratory which include cold rooms, growth rooms and incubator spaces. It also consists of Postgraduate laboratories and other support spaces, while the foyer and kitchen act as an interactive social space. The loft space, which was traditionally used for storage purposes was re – modeled to accommodate open plan offices. The project had a tight budget and was creatively completed within a short programme.
