Since 1989 we have worked with Uthango, a community organization who has been concentrating on developing learning, art and culture. The project however, was initiated by the youth within the community, after the 1976 riots. The aim was to focus on developing the community as opposed to focusing on violence. At the time only substandard government education was available and there was no support for alternative education. The caused frustration among the youth and was party the reason for the 1976 riots.Nyanga is one of the largest old townships with high density population, extremely poor infrastructure and public facilities.
