Location: CAPE TOWN, WESTERN CAPE Date: 1986 – 1988

Woodlands is a lower middle class residential area which is part of a greater development call Mitchells Plein, an area which was zoned for so called “coloured” people. The unemployment rate is high and in 1986 which we were introduced to the project, very few public buildings for recreation, culture or educational purposes existed.

Initial contact was made during the state of emergency, which made meeting with the community almost impossible. Meeting with the executive committee also proved to be a problem since key members were often detained for long periods of time. The changes in South Africa have lead to the coordinator for this project, Teressa Solomons, being elected as the deputy-mayor and then mayor of the new Cape Metropolitan Council.
