Location: GUGULETHU, WESTERN CAPE Date: 1995 - 1996

IN 1990 The University of the Western Cape (UWC)appointed CS Studio Architects to upgrade two and a half floors in the Mitchells Plein Medical Centre to function as a dental facility. Linked to this was a community outreach initiative and one of these points was to be established at the Gugulethu Day Hospital. This was in 1995 when UWC Dental Faculty Department of community Dentistry really did outreach work in townships and rural areas.

There was some existing space at the entrance of the existing Day Hospital which could easily be converted. The planning included three dental chairs, a waiting area and reception and a small laboratory to sterilize instruments and prepare the dental trays. There was also storage and ablutions. The small dental clinic functioned well and focused on the elderly and children.

The establishment was an agreement between the Independent Development Trust (IDT), the City of Cape Town and the Dental Faculty department of community dentistry. Unfortunately, this clinic does not exist anymore, and the area had to make space for expansion of the day hospital.
